Winning Stories (May 2026 Newsletter)

I was gassing up my car at exit 4 Shell (I still call it Shell) and fellow about my age was doing same.  He nodded to gas pumps (price) and remarked "strange new world we're living in."  I replied "for sure!  and this was totally unforced error."  He said "damn right."  I said "yeah its a disgrace! take care" and he started to drive off.  Then I remembered I had a business card in my pocket.  Ran up next to him and we chatted through his drivers window.  We exchanged contempt for the lunatic-in-chief.  I learned he and wife were at No Kings, and saw us caravanning.  "Oh you're them!"  I invited him to join us on the bridge on Sundays.  Didn't exchange names, but I bet we'll see him.  I also asked him to tell his friends.

Take away, always have cards handy and be alert for the smallest opening.

My wallet came with card slots on outside… how convenient!

Posted in celebration of my mother’s awakening.  92 and a lifelong Republican, voted for Trump 3X. She just asked if she can join me at a protest.  Only took a little over a decade of (mostly) gentle cajoling.  Hope this adds credence to the “Don’t offend or push to the point of defensiveness or possibly being misinterpreted as a criticism.    We catch more bees with honey than vinegar.     To QANON and back takes decades.

I just traveled up from PA through NY, CT and MA. It was only when I got back to NH that Bridge Brigades were out. Way to go NHBB!

I’m passing out cards to docs and nurses at Lowell General… my wife is here for an outpatient procedure (no worries all good!) and I picked up on subtle hints … always be listening for those … one nurse is from Nashua and sees us and always honks.

Idaho HB-577 has been defeated. This bill was a proposal in the Idaho legislature that would stop cities and towns from having their own local laws that protect LGBTQI+ people from discrimination. WOO HOO!!

At exit 16 in Concord, we had a convoy of about 8 or so northbound military-looking (National Guard maybe)  vehicles take the exit. They were exiting to turn around and go southbound, so they passed right by us on the bridge. Two of the vehicles honked, both as they passed us on the bridge and again a moment later as they drove under us heading back south!

Exit 7 had three 18 wheelers take the exit and pass right in front of us. Each of them honked many times. I think the price of diesel is really hurting truckers.
